Frequently Asked Questions

Why Germany and New Jersey? What about a party in Chicago?

While our home base is Chicago, our families are a little more spread out! David’s parents and mother’s side of the family all reside in Duttweiler, Germany. In fact, the winery where the wedding will be held is owned and operated by his family and when we envisioned the start of our marriage… we both pictured it there. Jamie’s family and much of David’s father’s side live on the East coast, and so it made sense to also hold a celebration out there for those who are unable to make the trip to Europe. We understand that there are some of you in between… not able to make it Germany and not able to make it to NJ. This makes us sad and you’ll be missed dearly but we know you’ll be with us in spirit and you can bet we’ll carry you in our thoughts on the big day.

Are you guys moving?

This has been a topic of much discussion and we are happy to finally share our decision and plans- YES! We are moving… to Duttweiler, Germany! David has accepted an apprenticeship to study winemaking for the next 2 years. Because the program starts in August 2008, it makes most sense for us to make the move prior to the wedding and just stay put afterwards. We’re extremely excited and looking forward to a whole new pace and quality of life there.

*A special note for those in Chicago…. Although we haven’t made any formal plans, something is sure to go down in the form of a farewell and we’d be honored if you’d help send us off.

Are you registered anywhere?

Well… not so much and we hope it doesn’t cause any confusion or frustration. We’re actually working to liquidate much of our stuff due to the move overseas. We know it’s often said, but honest and truly — your company and/or well wishes are more then enough! We have everything else taken care of! If anything, you are welcome to contribute a small donation to the American Heart Association or the Chicago Children's Advocacy Center, two organizations that are very important to us.

I’m planning to fly to Germany- any tips on airlines?

Frankfurt is one of Europe’s major hubs, and there are many great options to get you to there. From Chicago, we’ve had great luck with United, American, U.S. Airways, and our absolute favorite Air India (who also fly to Frankfurt from L.A.). Flying from Philadelphia, both U.S. Airways and Lufthansa offer direct flights. Unfortunately, June is the start of the summer travel season so tickets can be expensive, but if you’re patient and take the time to shop around, there are great deals to be had. The best bet is to check frequently with the major airlines/travel sites and if at all possible allow some flexibility in your itinerary – prices can vary by several hundred dollars depending on what day of the week you fly and how long your stay is. If you’re having any trouble, or would like any further advice, feel free to contact us and we’ll do whatever we can to help.

How and where do I book a place to stay in Duttweiler?

The closest larger hotels are in Neustadt (10-15 minutes away from Duttweiler by car or bus). They can be found at www.pr-hotel.de & www.ramada.de. If you’d like to stay closer, or somewhere more unique, there are several bed & breakfasts and private residences with rooms to rent in Duttweiler and the surrounding villages. Most of these establishments don’t have websites and often don’t speak much English, so contact us if you’re interested and we can help put you in touch.

Once I land in Frankfurt- how do I get to Duttweiler-area?

Duttweiler is about an hour away from Frankfurt by car. The autobahn can be daunting, especially after a long flight, but don’t fear - it isn’t as terrifying as it sounds. Here is a great guide to get you familiar with the rules of the road. Detailed directions can be found here. There is also excellent train service throughout Europe. From the Frankfurt airport, there are trains available to Mannheim and on to Neustadt/Duttweiler. Contact us if you have any questions.

What else is there to see and do in the area?

Duttweiler is in close proximity to Speyer, Heidelberg, Bad Dürkheim, the Pfälzerwald (one of Europes ’s largest forests), and the Deutsche Weinstrasse (the German Wine Road). All are popular tourist destinations and have a wealth of beauty and culture to offer. Further to the south is one of Jamie’s favorite places (and where part of her family comes from), the retreat town Baden Baden - known for its famous hot springs and spas. The Alsace region of France is quiet close, and many of Europe’s most popular destinations are no more than a day’s train ride away.
